Koshigoe Beach in Kanagawa gets busy with surfers and sea bathers during summer, but becomes an entirely different place in autumn. The time of evening calm in mid-October, I stood on the jetty of Koshigoe Fishing Port and watched a heron slowly walk across the shallow water at low tide. The wind had died down and the sun had just set over Enoshima Island. Perhaps it was a rare moment of luxury, resting its wings, free from worries of being bothered by obnoxious humans. I tried my best to breathe quietly and stay still, so I didn’t disturb the peaceful moment.
